Board Report
The Cemetery Board met on December 6, 2017. Barbara Donaldson was welcomed as a new member of the Board. Revenue and expenditures for 2017 were reviewed and approved.
Several monuments in the old part of the Cemetery are leaning and unstable; they represent a potential danger and are a liability issue for the Cemetery. The Board agreed to obtain a quote for the repair of these monuments. Depending on the cost the repairs will be done this year.
Treasurer’s Report
Operating expenses for 2017 were $7,736.75. Two additional one time expenditures – the property survey ($2024.39) and the memorial bench ($3830.70 + $200.00 to C & M Fund) put total expenditures for the year at $13,791.84. The cost of the memorial bench was covered by a generous donation in 2016.
Net income for 2017 was $11,730.49.
Carroll Berry
Carroll Berry, one of the longest serving members on the Cemetery board died on March 22 in his 93rd year. Carroll’s association with Lillies Cemetery was lifelong. Several generations of his family are buried here; his father, Stephen Berry was a cemetery trustee and served as cemetery caretaker for many year. Carroll and his brother, Austin helped their father and eventually Carroll assumed the duties of caretaker; he is succeeded in that capacity by his son, Richard. Carroll and his wife, the former Edith Stevens who served as secretary-treasurer were the mainstay of the Cemetery for over forty years.
Carroll is survived by his children, Richard Berry, Monique Berry-Steacy and Lisa (Mario) Cordeiro; grandsons, Justin and Jordan (Courtney) Cordeiro, Dalton and Conner Berry Steacy and great-grandson, Brody as well as brother, Austin (Velma) Berry and son-in-law Rodney Steacy. He was predeceased by one son Douglas and his wife Edith.
Bench
In September the granite bench donated by John and Valerie Bateman in memory her parents Hugh and Olive Henderson was installed in the area where the memorial service is held. It is an excellent addition to the Cemetery. A special thank you to Leeder Monuments for the installation.
Trees, Shrubs, Flowers and other Decorations
We are pleased to see the flowers that have been planted by some families and we encourage others to do so. Remember that planted flowers should be within one foot of the monument so that they do not interfere with mowing. Please contact the secretary-treasurer if you wish to plant shrubs or trees.
Artificial flowers and wreaths should be marked with your name and the name of the grave so that errant wreaths can be returned to their proper place.
As a volunteer organization the Baptist Cemetery welcomes anyone who is interested in becoming a board member or participating in any other capacity. If interested, please contact the secretary-treasurer.
